This week, Abilene Fire Department sees first use of Safe Haven Baby Box while Gov. Abbott reports similar use at Lubbock fire station

ABILENE, Texas — The Safe Haven Baby Box at Abilene Fire Station 7 was used for the first time on the morning of January 13, 2026, when firefighters discovered a male infant inside. The baby, estimated to be around 60 days old, was found healthy and in good condition, according to the Abilene Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the alert system at approximately 11:36 a.m. and followed established protocols to ensure the infant received a medical evaluation. An ambulance and an Abilene Police Department officer were dispatched to the station as part of the procedure. The infant was transported to Hendrick Medical Center by ambulance, accompanied by two firefighters, where he underwent a thorough medical evaluation and continues to receive care through the Child Protective Services network.
