Berkeley County fire prompts evacuation, multi-agency response

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — Central Berkeley Fire and EMS officials say crews protected several evacuated homes and their residents Thursday night when a large brush fire threatened to spread.

Assistant Fire Chief Colt Roy says crews were dispatched at 9 p.m. to the 2400 block of Ranger Drive after receiving two separate reports of the same fire.

The first firefighters got to the scene less than 10 minutes later and informed incoming crews that there was a big brush fire in a clearing beneath high voltage lines and it was moving quickly.

With those factors in mind, firefighters moved quickly, immediately asking for a plow from the South Carolina Forestry Commission and beginning efforts to keep the fire under control as it continued to spread…
