More than 38,000 gallons of distilled water distributed in six states, including Kentucky, recalled due to ‘foreign black substance’: FDA

CLEVELAND (WJW) – More than 38,000 gallons of distilled water have been voluntarily recalled by a Midwest superstore chain after a foreign substance was found “floating” in some of the bottles, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforcement report from last week.

The move comes after the “black foreign substance” was detected in certain gallon-size jugs of distilled water, the FDA reported. The agency’s report did not provide additional details on the substance.

The recall, which is currently ongoing, was first initiated in November 2025. The distilled water was distributed to all six states where Meijer operates superstores: Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

The affected water can be identified by its label, which reads “Meijer Steam Distilled Water,” as well as its lot code (39-222 #3) and UPC number (041250841197). The “Best By” date on each bottle is listed as Oct. 4, 2026…
