Christa Gail Pike has spent nearly three decades on death row in Tennessee. She was just 20 years old when a jury convicted her of torturing and killing her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. Her execution was scheduled for September 30, 2026, and if this were carried out, then she would be the 19th woman executed in the United States since 1976. And now the latest reports suggest that she has challenged the state’s lethal injection process.
According to The Tennesean, the 49-year-old is currently arguing that her execution plan is “unconstitutionally cruel”, the reason being her medical condition. An anaesthetist, Dr. Joel Zivot, who was familiar with her condition, revealed that Pike was suffering from a blood disorder and the injection would likely produce “bloody froth” in her lungs.
