Houston ISD seeks delay on teacher certification rules until 2029-30

Houston ISD plans to seek a delay in meeting a state requirement that core-subject teachers be certified until the 2029–30 school year.The district cited “statewide shortages of certified teachers and increased certification requirements” for this application in a Thursday board agenda.“The plan includes multi-year targets, intentional support for uncertified teachers, and expanded partnerships with Educator Preparation Programs,” according to the agenda.

Districts across the state have relied on uncertified teachers to fill vacancies amid a growing teacher shortage, but as a district of innovation HISD can exempt itself from some state education laws.

As part of the “historic” funding deal passed this year, state lawmakers tightened rules for uncertified teachers in core classes. Now teachers for core subjects are required to hold certain certificates or permits from the State Board for Educator Certification…
