As Texas’ war on rainbow paint continues apace, another rainbow crosswalk has disappeared, this time in San Antonio. But community members are stepping in to fill the void.
Earlier this week, the City of San Antonio stripped away rainbow crosswalks installed at the intersections of North Main Avenue and East Evergreen Street, part of the city’s historically gay Main Strip. Crews worked to scrape away the painted asphalt, saving only small colored pieces of the road drilled out of the ground for historical purposes. The crosswalk was removed as part of a directive Gov. Greg Abbott issued last fall to remove “political” messages from the streets of Texas cities under threat of losing state transportation funding.
But while one rainbow is disappearing, others are showing their colors. On Thursday, Planned Parenthood South Texas unveiled rainbow crosswalks in the parking lots of its health centers in San Antonio and Harlingen.
