Cleveland’s ER showdown: Cleveland Clinic sparks healthcare battle with trauma center plan

What would be so bad about having three top tier hospital systems in Cleveland having tier 1 trauma centers to treat the most pressing emergencies?

That’s what Today in Ohio hosts were asking Friday after the Cleveland Clinic announced plans to open its own center amid harsh criticism by MetroHealth. Both MetroHealth and University Hospitals already operate tier 1 centers, and MetroHealth says adding a third will actually harm patient care.

“MetroHealth is like, ‘wait a minute.’ They’re asking the Cleveland Clinic to reevaluate,” said Lisa Garvin. “They say that Greater Cleveland cannot support three level 1 trauma centers. It will harm patient outcomes and increase costs.”…
