Asylum Lake Preserve could change hands

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Asylum Lake Preserve, a popular nature preserve and parkland, may soon have a new owner, as Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo County officials explore a proposal to transition its management to the county’s care.

The first step toward an ownership transition will take place in February when the governing boards of WMU and Kalamazoo County review the proposal and decide whether to move forward with a legal agreement transferring responsibilities, the university said in a statement Friday.

Asylum Lake Preserve, a 274-acre parcel of land currently owned by WMU, is managed by the Asylum Lake Policy and Management Council, a group that includes representatives from local organizations, environmental groups and WMU academic departments…
