Southern Living names two Mississippi diners among best in South

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Two Mississippi diners were recently designated by Southern Living among the region’s most reputable diners.

Many of Mississippi’s best restaurants are often well-kept secrets among residents. However, the beloved nature of the Ajax Diner in Oxford and Brent’s Drugs in Jackson was noticed by writers at Southern Living magazine. Both were among the exclusive list of 14 eateries that the lifestyle magazine designated as the most beloved local diners in the South.

Mississippi restaurants recognized for Best Wings in the South

Pharmacist Alvin Brent opened and ran his own pharmacy and soda fountain in the Fondren neighborhood back in 1946. Though Brent eventually sold both in 1977, the pharmacy remained open until 2009. The restaurant’s soda fountain and classic bar stools remain in their original locations. Brent’s Drugs’ diner-style shakes, sundaes, floats, cocktails and brunch menu are popular among residents.

The namesake of Ajax Diner is the nickname of the original owner’s grandfather. The interior of the restaurant that opened in 1997 is modeled after the family cabin at the Neshoba County Fairgrounds in Philadelphia.
