SCDNR loses ‘career’ hunting case, hunter sues

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – It was one of the brightest moons Shane Huffman’s ever seen. One of those moons that can light up a deer in the middle of a field like a Christmas decoration.

And like a Christmas decoration, this deer was just as inanimate.

Huffman stopped his truck in the middle of Cox Mill Road, a rural two-lane road in Greenville County near Taylors. He’d heard about the infamous S.C. Department of Natural Resources decoy deer from a buddy.

Through a pair of binoculars, Huffman spotted the fake buck the SCDNR planted, hoping to snag a deer poacher in this undercover sting.

“G–d damn, friggin’ body camera lit up,” SCDNR Officer Robert Thomas whispered as soon as his body camera activated. Thomas was hiding in his patrol truck in the woods, watching Huffman’s truck stop in the road. The video showed Huffman’s headlights shining straight down the road, and the decoy was at a 90-degree angle off the side of the road.

Thomas was on the phone with DNR Lance Corporal Zach Tatum, but the body camera recordings show that Tatum was not on scene…
