Letter: Child care funding is important for economy

[Regarding “County Receives Update on Early Childhood Education,” Dec. 3, Xpress:]

I have long held opinions about the importance of child care as economic infrastructure. My thoughts are based on having been a working mother in a two-income family, as well as my 30-plus years of experience working with businesses on workforce and economic development for chambers of commerce.

I commend the Early Childhood Education and Development Committee for looking at ways to more closely target goals for the use of Buncombe County’s funds. We need to be able to move the needle on this incredibly important issue. The number of infant slots has been insufficient for quite a while, and it’s by far the most expensive care to provide, more than a year of in-state college tuition!…
