RALEIGH — A federal judge has blocked a legislative committee from case files involving the murder of Iryna Zarutska, the young Ukrainian woman allegedly stabbed to death by Decarlos Brown Jr. on Charlotte’s light rail system on Aug. 22, 2025.
Brown has been charged by the state with first-degree murder and faces a federal charge of committing murder on public transportation.
The public defender representing Brown filed an emergency motion to block the General Assembly House Oversight Committee from gaining access to the investigative files, apparently in response to learning the committee had requested the files from Mecklenburg District Attorney Spencer Merriweather…
