US-131 in Grand Rapids reopened after multicar crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The northbound lanes of the freeway in Grand Rapids were shut down for a few hours early Sunday morning following a multi-car crash, state police say. They have since reopened.

Northbound US-131 between Martin Luther King Jr. Street SW and Wealthy Street was shut down from about 2:45 a.m. until just before 5 a.m. while crews investigated and cleared the wreckage of an eight-vehicle crash, Michigan State Police said in a statement.

A fire blocker utility vehicle was struck during the investigation, deputies said.

Law enforcement and road commission authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution as icy and snowy conditions are expected to continue into early next week. The Kent County Road Commission advises drivers to allow extra time when traveling, drive with the headlights on, slow down and adjust to conditions, give plows at least 200 feet of space to work and make sure windshield wipers are functioning before getting on the roads…
