Former Northside High School reopens as $81M community hub

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday for the new Northside Square, an $81 million project that transformed the former Northside High School into affordable housing, retail and office space.

The development includes 42 affordable housing units reserved for families who make 80 percent below the median income–about $40,000 a year or less.

Leaders said giving new life to the school allows a new generation to connect with their community’s history.

“It’s refreshing to see buildings be able to have new life and this building served generations of Memphians for many, many years. They have a lot of memories connected to this place,” said Mayor Paul Young. “And now moving forward this same building is going to be able help create new memories for another generation of Memphians.”…
