Renewal of infrastructure sales tax gearing up

FORT PIERCE – St. Lucie County officials are taking their public information campaign on the road to tell local government how its residents have benefitted from the half-cent sales tax voters approved in 2018 for “better roads, more sidewalks and cleaner rivers.”

Officials hope reporting the outcomes of the 10-year tax bump that’s expected to plow $370 million into local infrastructure projects will result in voters approving another 10-year extension in November.

Erick Gill, St. Lucie County communications director, told the Fort Pierce City Commission this week that the city receives about $2.8 million of the $31.8 million collected by the half-cent surcharge each year. Over the life of the infrastructure sales tax surcharge, four taxing units will share $370.3 million for roads, bridges, sidewalks and river projects, including Fort Pierce’s share of $32.6 million…
