WAY BACK WHEN – Santa Barbara in January 1926

A Bathtub Thief? Santa Barbara had been very proud to report that there was no looting here after the big earthquake had hit us in June last year (1925). But I suppose all good things must come to an end. The no-looting record was broken by a man who broke into the ruins of the Hotel Barbara at State and Cota and somehow snuck off with multiple bathtubs.

Not surprising – this set a record. The local paper reported, “This is the first bathtub theft ever reported in Santa Barbara.” – Santa Barbara Morning Press, January 26, 1926…
