Local woman hosts first-ever ‘sew-a-thon’ for foster children

YORK, Pa. — Dozens of women gathered at New York Wire Works in York on Saturday for a sew-a-thon aimed at helping children entering foster care — creating comfort bags filled with items meant to provide something to call their own during a difficult transition.

The event was organized by Biglerville resident Judy Geary, who has spent months hand-sewing what she calls “comfort bags” or “placement bags” for foster children.

In November, Geary told FOX43 she was motivated to start this project after noticing all of the extra fabric she had stored in her walk-in closet. She explained that children often arrive with their belongings stuffed into a trash bag and for many, it is the first message they receive during an already frightening transition…
