Orr files Tristan Hollis Memorial bill to address police pursuits

Four months after the high-speed pursuit initiated by Priceville police that ended in Hartselle and resulted in the death of a 17-year-old Hartselle resident not involved in the pursuit, a local state legislator filed a bill that would further regulate vehicular pursuits.

Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, filed Senate Bill 120, also known as the Tristan Hollis Memorial Act, this week. It is named for the teenager killed in the deadly Sept. 6 pursuit.

“We put the bill together to hopefully bring some guardrails to hot pursuits,” Orr said Thursday. “We need to allow law enforcement to do the jobs that they need to do, which are very difficult jobs, and not stand as an impediment to chasing criminals, but if there’s a commonsense way to bring some protections for the public at large, we at least need to explore those.”…
