Salt Lake City opens nationwide search for artists to create ‘public artwork’ for Fleet Block

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The southeast corner of the former Fleet Block site in Salt Lake City has looked a little bare since March 2025, when the social justice murals once found on its walls were torn down to make room for new developments in the Granary district.

A year later, Salt Lake City has now opened a nationwide search for artists to add a “significant public artwork” to honor the spirit of the original art found near 320 W 900 South.

The Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Public Art Program, in collaboration with Salt Lake City Public Lands, the Mayor’s Office, and project stakeholders, is looking for an artist or an artist-led team to create a public artwork for the Fleet Block Open Space in Salt Lake City.

The space previously housed murals honoring community members who had died, and the city hopes to maintain the same values in the new artwork. They ask that the artwork reflect “extensive community engagement, including justice, equity, belonging, and collective healing.”
