Potential Winter Storm Headed to Alabama and the South this Weekend

The Townsquare Media Weather Center is closely monitoring the potential for winter weather this weekend. As I’ve shared, forecasts for winter systems typically evolve, with details becoming clearer as the event draws closer.

Even James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, posed the question this morning, “WEEKEND WINTER MISCHIEF?

Here’s a look at what we know so far, based on the latest information:

  • Forecast confidence is growing as global models align on the possibility of a high-impact winter storm threat affecting parts of the Deep South, including Alabama, on Saturday.
  • “Shallow, cold air drops in from the north, a broad low forms to the south in the Gulf,” said Spann. “This scenario often leads to freezing rain (precipitation in liquid form that falls when temperatures are at or below 32 degrees). And, a long period of freezing rain leads to an ice storm.”
  • Right now, the greatest potential for winter weather on Saturday appears to be focused on the northern half of Alabama.
  • At this time, the highest chance of impactful winter weather on Saturday will be over the northern half of Alabama.

Spann mentions that “It is way too early to forecast specific impact from this (road conditions, etc). We will be able to do that on Thursday. But just be aware that a disruptive winter storm is very possible over the northern half of Alabama Saturday.”…
