Appleton orders shutdown of tourist rooming house for code violations

A downtown Appleton tourist rooming house that was ordered to cease and desist operation due to code violations is continuing to operate until its appeal of the order can be heard, according to city staff.

The status of Stateview Commons’ tourist rooming house on the second floor of 532 W. College Ave. came to light in response to a question from Mayor Jake Woodford during the Jan. 14 Board of Health meeting.

“This property is operating effectively illegally as an Airbnb, as a temporary rooming house,” Woodford said. “This temporary rooming house does not meet our code requirements for life safety. So, it’s important to make note of that for the public record.”…
