DMPS hosting bus driver hiring event amid driver requirement changes

DES MOINES, Iowa — With the successful passage of Des Moines Public Schools’ “Reimaging Education” program, the district now needs to expand its infrastructure. That includes adding bus drivers.

DMPS officials say bus drivers are in constant need for the district. They are also excited by the passage of new legislation that took effect at the start of the year, which adjusts the requirements for school bus drivers.

House File 395 gives school districts more control over how much training and how many refresher courses are required for school bus drivers. DMPS officials say this will allow them to tailor their training to the needs of the district. As of now, their requirements remain the same, but officials will soon meet to see how they would like to make adjustments following the new law.

For instance, DMPS drivers have to deal with urban settings and tight spaces. A more rural district could focus on the hazards of driving on dirt or gravel roads in its driver training. School bus drivers are still required to meet federal standards.
