SHREVEPORT, La. — A gunshot detection system similar to those used in other cities is unlikely to be implemented in Shreveport anytime soon, according to local law enforcement officials.
The city of Lafayette recently tested a gunshot detection system on a trial basis. The technology uses sound-detection sensors and triangulation to identify the location of suspected gunfire. When a loud, impulsive sound is detected, audio is analyzed and mapped to determine where the shot likely originated.
One of the most widely used gunshot detection systems in the country relies on machine-learning algorithms to analyze audio in five-second increments. If a gunshot is identified, the audio clip is transmitted to a cloud-based platform for additional review and storage.
