U.S. Marshals searching for federal escapee who walked away from San Antonio halfway house

SAN ANTONIO – The U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force is asking for the public’s help to locate Malachi Christopher Farias, who officials say escaped from a Federal Bureau of Prisons Residential Reentry Center in San Antonio.

Farias was convicted in 2024 of conspiracy to transport undocumented people and was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, according to the U.S. Marshals. After completing that sentence, he was expected to serve three years of supervised release. Officials said he was finishing his sentence at a halfway house when he disappeared.

The U.S. Marshals said Farias failed to report for a scheduled inmate count on Jan. 15, 2026, and was later determined to be missing. Officials said he was last accounted for around 6:25 p.m. He had a visitor earlier that evening, and officials said there has been no trace of him since.
