Fifteen years later, firefighter remembered for his sacrifice in Parkville blaze

Fifteen years after a deadly apartment fire in Baltimore County, firefighters continue to remember Mark G. Falkenhan, who was killed while searching for occupants above a fire that rapidly intensified inside a Parkville apartment building.

Falkenhan, a volunteer member of the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company, died Jan. 19, 2011, after becoming trapped during a flashover while conducting a search on the third floor of a three-story apartment complex. He was 43 years old.

A call for a kitchen fire inside an apartment in the unit block of Dowling Circle came in at 6:18 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2011. After the first engine arrived, the fire quickly escalated to a second-alarm, and eventually, four alarms’ worth of equipment were dispatched…
