ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Garth Fagan Dance invited the community out for a day of free dance lessons.
Classes were offered to individuals ranging from 5 years old to adults. Whether they’d never danced before or had danced for years, the space welcomed participants to learn the Fagan Technique. The classes were taught by the dance company’s performers, bringing the choreography from the stage directly to the community.
“It’s really important,” Amya Brice, Garth Fagan Dance, School administrator, said of the event. “To be able to offer a specific dance that focuses on African dance and modern dance can be very important for our youth who maybe don’t know our history, and how African dance connects back to African-American dance and ties back to who we are as a people.”…
