Cop watcher who was awarded $510k after San Diego Sheriff’s sergeant assaulted and arrested him heads back to court for a new trial

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. — An Imperial Beach “cop watcher,” who records police stops to hold law enforcement accountable, returned to state court for a second trial over a June 22, 2022, violent altercation with a Sheriff’s Sergeant, which resulted in his arrest.

In September 2024, a jury awarded cop watcher Marcus Boyd $510,000 for claims that San Diego County Sheriff Sergeant William Munsch falsely imprisoned him and was negligent in doing so.
