Water restored after water main bursts on Straub Road in Greece

GREECE, N.Y. — Water has been restored to people around Straub Road in Greece after a water main broke on Tuesday morning.

The break happened near Fox Meadow and impacted around 15 to 20 customers, the Monroe County Water Authority confirmed. Earlier this morning, News10NBC’s photojournalist saw water gushing from the road and Greece Police blocking off the area.

The Water Authority says it learned about the break around 5:15 a.m. and water was restored just under five hours later. The agency says it can’t definitely say what caused the break, but breaks are more common in frigid temperatures. This morning, temperatures were in the low teens and aren’t expected to reach above 14. Freezing temperatures cause the ground to shift, which can put increased pressure on pipes. Also, pipes become more brittle in the cold.

As temperatures drop, pipes can also burst inside homes. Copper pipes are particularly susceptible to freezing and splitting when the heat is off for a prolonged period of time. See News10NBC’s report on preventing pipe bursts here…
