The National Weather Service has warned much of Texas of incoming winter storm conditions over the weekend, with forecasts ranging from freezing rain to possible snow as part of what one former NOAA official called a “widespread potentially catastrophic event.”
Twenty-one Texas counties on Tuesday were placed under a winter storm watch, valid from Friday morning until Sunday noon. Central Texas, particularly Austin, is preparing for severe cold, with forecasts predicting temperatures to drop below freezing by Saturday morning.
“Expect power outages and tree damage due to the ice. Travel could be limited to near impossible in certain areas,” the NWS warned. “If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.”…
