Homeowners in Des Moines can apply for exterior repair assistance

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines homeowners who need help to complete crucial repairs to the exterior of their homes may be eligible for assistance from the city through the Improving Our Neighborhoods program.

The ION program provides financial assistance to help improve Des Moines’ aging housing stock, which, in turn, improves the overall condition of the city’s neighborhoods.

Once a homeowner has applied, a liaison will work with them to determine if they meet financial eligibility guidelines and usher them through the process. If they qualify, a city inspector will do an exterior inspection to determine what work is needed. Recommendations will be prepared by the inspector, and cost estimates from approved contractors will be gathered. The inspector will go over the proposed work with the homeowner before any work begins.

An eligible homeowner could receive assistance for critical and deferred maintenance repairs, including roofing, siding, windows, doors, and other exterior structural needs.

The city urges homeowners at or below 80 percent of the area median income to apply, even if they aren’t sure whether they’ll qualify…
