Wichita sales tax campaign materials make claims on city’s finances, infrastructure needs

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Wichitans will vote March 3 on a 1% sales tax proposal, with campaign materials from the Wichita Forward group making several claims about the city’s financial condition and infrastructure needs.

The group’s fact sheet claims that it is busting misconceptions about the proposal. It counters opinions like “the sales tax is too high in Wichita” or “not enough money goes to tax relief in the proposal.” The sheet makes three major claims: that the city of Wichita is broke, that the fire and police stations are falling apart, and that the city has no funding plans for the Second Light homeless shelter.

City budget claims disputed

City Council Member JV Johnston disputed the claim that Wichita is broke.

“I don’t agree with that. Our budget looks good this year. We are showing about a $4 million deficit in ’27 and an $8 million deficit in ’28,” Johnston said…
