Gwinnett schools’ plan to end kindergarten ‘redshirting’ riles parents

Jessica Jimenez’s son and daughter were born a year apart, but because of a change in when Gwinnett County Public Schools lets children enroll in school, they may end up in the same grade.

Jimenez and her husband “redshirted” their children, who were both born in summer months. Redshirting is a practice where parents wait until their children are 6 to enroll them in kindergarten, rather than when they are 5, in order to give them more time to develop before they start school.

Jimenez’s son turned 6 last summer and started kindergarten last August…
