GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — West Michigan is bracing for extreme cold as a polar vortex bears down on the region this weekend. The extreme cold air is expected to arrive early Friday morning and persist through Sunday, possibly breaking long-standing records for low temperatures in the region.
Beginning early Friday morning, expect temperatures to drop drastically from Thursday evening’s temperatures in the low teens and high single digits to below zero during the morning commute.
Throughout the weekend, it is recommended to stay indoors, and when it is absolutely necessary to go outside, to dress in layers and avoid exposing skin to the cold air. Frostbite can set in on exposed skin quickly when temperatures are this low.
