Knoxville woman charged with neglect of an elderly adult involving family member

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A Knoxville woman is facing a charge of aggravated neglect of an elderly adult resulting in serious bodily injury after a bed-bound family member who she was serving as a caregiver for was treated for ulcers and sores that resulted in visible bones, court records said.

According to a general sessions docket, law enforcement became involved after the case involving severe medical neglect was referred from adult protective services on January 13.

A narrative in the docket said the victim, a 74-year-old man, suffered from a stroke more than eight years ago and became bed-bound in roughly the last six months. On January 2, he was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where staff discovered he had a blood sugar of more than 600 as well as “extensive” pressure ulcers and bed sores on his lower back and body, the narrative stated. Specifically, the docket noted that one of the sores on his lower back was bad enough that three of his vertebrae were visible.

He has since been admitted to a critical care unit, where he has undergone surgeries to remove necrotic tissue form his wounds and other treatments…
