Lakeland’s gift of a vacant piece of land to Habitat for Humanity may provide affordable, stable housing for countless local families.
City commissioners voted 7-0 on Jan. 20 to donate a small parcel at 710 N. Ohio Ave. to Lakeland Habitat for Humanity. The nonprofit organization plans to use it to launch a new program.
“There are many people in the area, CRA areas, who are living in homes that have been handed down generation after generation. They are either loaded with code violations or in need of major repairs,” said Claire Twomey, CEO of Lakeland Habitat for Humanity. “When I see houses like this being torn down with families, I don’t know where they are going.
