Doctors who performed surgery on injured Sedgwick County Zoo chimpanzee discuss procedure

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Alitzeti is recovering quickly. The 2-year-old chimpanzee needed surgery that included a toe amputation following an altercation with her troop’s alpha male last week.

“Alizeti has a strong prognosis and is expected to regain full use of her foot. She will spend several weeks behind the scenes with Bea (another chimp in the troop) while she heals, where she’ll receive attentive care, enrichment, and monitoring from her care team,” the Sedgwick County Zoo said on Friday.

Following the successful surgery, the zoo provided an update on Alizeti, now wearing a cast and eager to play. One of the doctors who provided the surgical care for her injuries that also included lost teeth, discussed what the chimp went through…
