An estimated 90 to 100 employees are being laid off across BREC as the organization undergoes restructuring, interim Superintendent Janet Simmons said this week.
The layoffs, announced Friday, are part of a larger plan to revamp the organization, privatize certain areas of BREC and possibly adjust the retirement plans offered to new hires. Simmons said the changes are intended to make the parish parks commission more efficient.
“We’re wanting to be able to provide services to the community in an efficient and effective way that’s using taxpayer dollars to the best,” she said. “So doing a reduction in force is just a matter of having the departments look at their team and seeing, ‘Do I need these positions or do I need to consolidate?’”…
