Russell County issues rabies alert in Crawford

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office released a Rabies Warning for the Crawford community last Thursday via a press release. The Citizenposted a notice on Facebook the next morning. The RCSO and health officials are urging residents to be vigilant. The notice was issued after a stray cat in the Crawford community area, not specified in the press release, tested positive on Jan. 14.

Rabies is most often spread through the bite of an infected animal. Scratches and contact between saliva and a person’s eyes, nose, mouth, or open wound can also pose a risk, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.
