Doctors warn frostbite can happen in minutes as extreme cold grips eastern Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – With dangerously cold temperatures expected through the weekend, experts say frostbite can happen much faster than many people realize — especially when skin is exposed.

Doctors with University of Iowa Health Care say frostbite occurs when skin and underlying tissue begin to freeze, most often affecting fingers, toes, ears, and noses. As temperatures drop, the body slows blood flow to those areas in an effort to preserve heat.
