Chicago Sun-Times falsely reports CPD killed 12 people this year; actual number is zero

In a remarkable series of errors, the Chicago Sun-Times has published data claiming Chicago police officers have shot and killed 11 people already this year — and felled another in “a police-related stabbing.”

But according to Chicago Police Department records, the city’s officers have not shot (or stabbed) anyone this year, although one person was cut by flying glass when an officer discharged their gun during an investigatory stop.

The paper’s error appears in its online “Violence Tracker,” where the outlet claims to list every homicide victim in the city with a summary of how each was killed. But for reasons unclear, many of the summaries blame police for murders that the cops did not commit. The CPD-focused blog Second City Cop was the first to report on the Sun-Times errors…
