Advanced DNA genealogy leads to ID of remains found near Lake Okeechobee in 2021

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A cutting-edge forensic genealogy technique has helped detectives finally identify skeletal remains discovered along a Lake Okeechobee trail nearly five years ago.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that the human remains belonged to William Wolfgang McKinnis, a U.S. military veteran originally from Boston, Massachusetts.

On June 12, 2021, a couple walking the scenic trail in the Canal Point Recreation Area came across human remains. PBSO’s Violent Crimes Division and the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner responded, but investigators found no clues pointing to who the person was or how they died…
