Ohio man pleads to misdemeanor charge in North East truck fire case

NORTH EAST — An Ohio man accused by the Pennsylvania State Police of sneaking onto trucking company property in North East Township and setting fire to a tractor-trailer in late December was released from prison Jan. 21 after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge in the case.

The accused, 70-year-old John T. Bagi, had faced charges including felony counts of reckless burning, risking a catastrophe and criminal mischief. But the state police withdrew those charges, along with a number of other counts Bagi faced, at his preliminary hearing before North East District Judge Scott Hammer Jan. 21.

Bagi pleaded guilty to a third-degree misdemeanor count of criminal mischief at the hearing and was sentenced to time served, according to Hammer and court records. Bagi, of Valley City, Ohio, had been in the Erie County Prison on $100,000 bond since his arraignment Dec. 27…
