SELMA – After multiple meetings, repeated public comment and consideration of what can be done, the city of Selma has taken another step forward in managing its ongoing animal population issues.
On Jan. 20, the Selma City Council unanimously adopted a resolution that more clearly outlines the Selma Animal Shelter’s responsibility to accept drop-offs and retrieve dogs and cats within the city limits. A long-running point of contention amongst community members, the resolution establishes clearer shelter procedures and acknowledges the prior transfer of shelter oversight from the police department to the community services director.
“(Animal shelter workers) have their heart in the right place, and they really do want what’s best for the animals, but we need more structure there and we need a policy consistently followed,” said Mayor Scott Robertson in his comments…
