Lansing shelters see surge in homeless seeking refuge from cold

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Local shelters and warming centers are filling up as many homeless people in the area seek a reprieve from the bitter cold on Friday evening.

Mark Criss, executive director of the City Rescue Mission, said more than 320 people visited the shelter on Thursday night, including Jeremy Oats, who said he had nowhere else to go.

“I don’t have a lot of friends or anything that I can depend on,” Oats said. “Maybe I could probably warm up for a second or two, but being here is very convenient.”

Oats is originally from Ohio, but he fell on hard times after taking a trip to Michigan he couldn’t afford, and he said he would be on the street in subzero temperatures on Friday if not for City Rescue Mission…
