This Florida stretch is loaded with golf courses — and there’s demand for more

Golf has long been one of the most popular pastimes on the Treasure Coast in Florida, a stretch along the Atlantic Ocean. Now, there are signs that its popularity is growing and, adding general population growth to the picture, new course construction can hardly keep up.

Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties combine for more than twice as many golf courses per capita as the national average, with one of the counties having more than four times as many courses per 10,000 residents as the nation, recent analysis by TCPalm found.

Treasure Coast well above national, statewide averages

There are 72 golf courses on the Treasure Coast, according to a list compiled by TCPalm, roughly 0.99 courses per 10,000 residents. According to Links Magazine, there are roughly 16,000 courses in the United States, more than five times more than any other country in the world.
