Man gets 8 years in federal prison in Iowa fentanyl death case

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Massachusetts man was sentenced this week to eight years in federal prison for conspiring to distribute fentanyl that caused a death in Iowa, federal prosecutors said.

Michael Thomas D’Orlando, 47, of Malden, Massachusetts, was sentenced Jan. 20 in U.S. District Court after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, according to court records released by U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Investigators said D’Orlando mailed packages containing a powder with fentanyl to an individual in the Southern District of Iowa. On Nov. 27, 2023, the Norwalk Police Department responded to a report of a deceased person. Authorities later determined the victim ingested the substance sent by D’Orlando and died as a result of fentanyl toxicity…
