Madison will gain another bagel shop this fall when Barrett’s Bagels opens a storefront at 3742 Speedway Road on the near westside. Owner Ben Anderson announced the news earlier this week via Instagram.
Anderson introduced Barrett’s Bagels in 2023, then a much smaller pop-up operation that has grown in the past few years. Prior to running his own baking business, Anderson gained experience at local bakeries Batch Bakehouse and Madison Sourdough.
He currently produces bagels out of the kitchen at Pasture and Plenty on Old University Avenue and sells them, along with bagel sandwiches, at the Monroe Street Farmers’ Market on Sundays (May through October) at Edgewood High School. Barrett’s Bagels also has pop-up sales throughout the year at various locations, but most often at Pasture and Plenty. His stock at the farmers’ market and pop-up sales regularly sell out.
Currently in the space is a local yarn shop, Sunset Yarn. Anderson says owner Lynette Tucker is planning to retire and close her operation in May. “This is a great opportunity to keep this building a small local business,” he says…
