Fiery fatal crash tore engine block from victim’s vehicle, driver faces homicide charges

TOWN OF MEDINA, Wis. — A driver who prosecutors said crossed the center line and caused a fatal crash last year now faces homicide charges.

Gavin Schulz, 21, of Marshall is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, homicide by vehicle with a detectable amount of restricted controlled substance, injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle and use of a vehicle with a controlled substance in the blood causing great bodily harm.

The charges stem from a July 29, 2025 crash in the Town of Medina that killed Magiel Antonio Castro Morales, 39, of Columbus. According to the complaint, Castro was the passenger in a Nissan Altima that Schulz hit head-on. Schulz and the driver of the Altima were injured in the crash…
