Albany mayor holds press conference ahead of winter storm

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs held a press conference on Friday to brief the community on upcoming city operations ahead of the winter storm forecasted to hit the area this weekend. The mayor was joined by officials representing several city departments, including the Water Department, the Fire Department, and the Department of General Services.

Mayor Applyrs affirmed that the city is ready for what is expected to be the first severe storm of the season, saying that numerous departments are preparing and planning to do everything necessary to keep people safe. Residents are asked to park their cars in their driveways and shovel sidewalks adjacent to their homes so as to not impede city workers.

Property owners who don’t ensure their nearby sidewalks are safe for pedestrians and city operations within 24 hours of the snowfall ending will be billed for a clearing service and may be subjected to a fine. Residents are also encouraged to work from home and stay off the roads as much as possible.

Governor Hochul declares state of emergency

The city’s garbage service is still expected to be collected on Monday. Albany residents are reminded to never use stoves or ovens to provide warmth if their heat goes out due to the posed carbon monoxide poisoning threat.

Applyrs stated that a Code Blue Extreme Alert will be in place in the city from Friday through Monday with temperatures anticipated to fall down to single digits. The alert allows for expanded eligibility and expanded operating hours for shelter services. Those in need can visit the following facilities:
