The Alachua County School Board during its Jan. 20 meeting addressed widespread rumors that Hawthorne Middle/High School was slated for closure as the district looks for ways to confront the challenges of a rapidly shifting public education landscape.
Board members told residents — many of whom attended to defend the Hawthorne school — that they had not discussed closing the school or any other school in the district.
